New Project…Under the Sea

arts, drawings, fantasy

I have always loved the sea, well looking at it at least. There is something magical and breathtaking about it and of course it is home to some of the most wondrous creatures and plants.I love a good coastal theme too so it was on natural to use the ocean and its  contents as a source of inspiration for my artwork and illustration.

My new project is based on the sea, but like many of my drawings or paintings I wanted to include and element of storytelling. This combination of themes can be seen most plainly in my jellyfish series of drawings…here is a preview…

Sometimes you plan drawings…sometimes you don’t – I find the ones that aren’t planned are stronger. This concept wasn’t planned, it just happened. A3 in size it is a larger piece. It is part of a series, you’ll have seen snippets if you follow me on instagram.

Here is another drawing in progress…

And another, but this one involves digital painting…

So this is just one side of my under the sea theme, there shall be more to come, I’m really enjoying exploring the depths of the ocean!

Hello Sailor! – New Art

fantasy

Good news, today I’m going to introduce you to some new animal art! Huzzah! I did this little illustrative piece a couple of weeks ago and it’s featuring one of my favourite characters that I’ve created…Sammy Seal. Here she is in all of her glory:

Sammy Seal

Sammy Seal

Sammy Seal features in a childrens book that I wrote titled, ‘Peter Penguins Red Balloon’, yes it is as exciting as it sounds. It was a gift for my first niece’s first Christmas. You can see the original Sammy Seal in my digital paintings section as part of my gallery, together with the beautiful Peter Penguin himself! Expect him to return very shortly, as I am busy creating a few special things for Christmas time. It may be only the start of September, but there’s a lot to get done, I’m hoping to attend a few craft fairs, so, of course, I need some brand new stock!

The Mermaid

A few weeks ago I posted a blog about a mermaid painting that I started, now I still haven’t finished it as I have been busy with other projects, however, I thought I’d share how it’s coming a long…so here she is….(that’s right a double whammy of exciting art!)

Mermaid Painting in Progress

Mermaid Painting in Progress

She still needs a lot of work, but I hope to have her finished soon, I may print the digital version and work into it traditionally – I love this technique, as I adore both traditional and digital techniques…plus it makes things a little more exciting! I really want to give this painting have an eerie, magical feeling, with the way that she is staring with that watch, I don’t think that will be too difficult, do you?

Anyway, I shall leave you with this, I hope you like it. You can view more art at my website and if you would like more information either comment below or send me an email at geowen89@gmail.com.

Is that a…Wizard Bird?

Is that a...WIzard Bird?

This magical little bird appeared to me in doodle form on a slow day at work. He has since been sketched (as you can see) and is currently being brought to life on my computer screen. I am thinking of some exciting stories about him, although I’m yet to give him a name, poor bird. He looks happy enough at the moment.

That’s it from me tonight, short and sweet. I’ve been ill with a bad cold so forgive me AND there will be more exciting posts soon!

The Wolf (New Painting)

I created this digital painting from a pencil drawing I had produced quite a while ago. Inspired by Winter…waiting for the snow at Christmas that never happened. It might happen later who knows!?

Painting in Progress – Fairy!

arts, design, drawings, fantasy, illustration, paintings

Hello all,

Good morning hope you aren’t too cold in the dastardly Winter weather. Yes, I am being typically British and always complaining about the weather – the frost looks pretty though. As you know if you have read my blog before (if not hello, welcome take a look around) a lot of my art work is indeed inspired by our weathery goodness and this new one in progress is inspired by the frost (brrr).

fairy on branch

At the moment she does not look very frosty she looks quite warm with the colours I have used. What I’m hoping to achieve is that her wings will look like Autumn leaves and I can add some frosty details on the wings and hair. In fact I may colour the dress also and create little beads of frost across it, I think a beautiful frost covered cobweb would look fantastic here too. Tell me what you think and I will have a play and hopefully create something amazing!

In other news my home learning web/graphic design course is going well but unfortunately my Adobe trial is nearly over so I’ll have to buy it before I can make my own website. I’m really enjoying it but there is so much information and so much more to learn. It’s a good job I’m patient and like learning new things!

Maybe one day when you search fairy art I’ll be the top of the Google list! We can but dream.

Anyway Fairy Followers I’ll keep you updated I better get back to work.

Until next time have a good day!

Hello Fairy Followers!

I haven’t updated for a while – sorry about that – I have been busy being a Father Christmas like soul making babygrows and cushions then send them off to their new home. I didn’t really have anything new to put on here so today I have a treat for you all. Although, if you follow me on facebook  www.facebook.com/pages/Graces-Creations/221906364510343 (there’s the link there if you don’t :P) you will have already seen it. I have a new fairy on the way so here is the initial sketch for you;

ImageHere is also the beginning of it being coloured;

…naturally it’ll probably look completely different when completed but as usual I’ll do a ‘painting in progress’ report as I go. “Report” sounds completely boring…they are quite interesting (Promise!) I actually like the sketchiness of the first picture, I think it’d make a good graphic design for a T-shirt or bag, so I’ll be sure to keep that version of it and have an experiment with it as a design. Oh isn’t being an artist fun?

At the moment I have also started doing a course in graphic design and web design which has taken up a lot of my time, but hopefully when I complete it I’d be able to make a fantastic fantasy fairy website and lots of fairy motifs as well. We shall see!

Anyway, have a lovely day and please tell me if you’ve seen a partridge in a pear tree and please take a picture of it.

Until next time Fairy Followers!

Spring Sleeping (Painting in Progress)

arts, drawings, fantasy, illustration, paintings

Hello Fairy Followers,

I started this painting probably a couple of weeks ago now, unfortunately I completely forgot to take some step by step photos so here we have the almost finished version.

Like a lot of my fairy paintings it is inspired by the seasons, I love the colours of Autumn. I wanted to contrast the rich colours of Autumn with the fresh colours of spring and summer flowers. I still need to add more details to the roses and the wings. It’s unusual for me to have such an obvious background, I do enjoy creating characters more than backgrounds but, I decided I would get out of my comfort zone and challenge myself. I’m really glad I did as I really love the eerie/fantasy atmosphere that the rays of sunshine add to the painting.

Here is a version of it in black and white:

Well, I better get on with adding the extra details to it and finishing it!
