The Influence of Landscape Art

The Influence of Landscape Art

Landscape art is one of the most recognisable and popular art forms across the entire world. It is also one of the oldest. The definition of landscape art is that it is the depiction of landscapes, natural scenery such as mountains, trees, beaches and forests. Whether it is in photographic, drawn or painted form, it has the power to be truly evocative. It is one of the most powerful forms of art; possibly because, as humans, we can all appreciate the beauty and unpredictable forces of nature. Although I mostly create fantasy and wildlife paintings, I have a true appreciation for this form of art.

Recently I have been truly inspired by landscape paintings, and have found an excellent collection of both old and new styled paintings on Mark Mitchell’s website. As many other budding artists know, viewing another artist’s work can really help to get your creative juices flowing, so below are two of my favourite landscape artworks.

Brightening Later by Terry Watts

Brightening later – Acrylic on paper 64.1 x 45.1cm by Terry Watts

The sky is an integral part of landscape artwork, the only exception being if the subject is a woodland or forest, which is why I love the above painting entitled Brightening Later by Terry Watts – it is almost photographic. The clouds take up the majority of the paper, making the painting exceptionally dramatic. The painting itself is quite moody, but it leaves the viewer with a sense of hope the sun will break out of the clouds.

Bøgholm Lake in autumn by Sigvard Hansen

Bøgholm Lake in autumn – Oil on canvas 82 x 127cm

This painting entitled Bøgholm Lake in autumn by Sigvard Hansen is truly spectacular. It is truly gorgeous and is a celebration of summer. The feeling you get when you gaze upon this painting is that of true delight. The details of the plants are wonderfully mesmerising, and you can almost feel the breeze upon your skin.

Below is a digital painting that I have created since rediscovering my love of landscape art:

Speed painting

Landscape art will never ever go out of style and it will always be relevant, as our landscape is always changing and will always have an emotionally evocative effect on the human race. In the future, I hope to create more landscape art, as taking on new challenges and trying new subject matter is a large part of being an artist. I hope to combine landscape paintings with my love of animals and fantastical creatures to create even better wildlife art with truly outstanding backgrounds.

A3 Prints and Owl Potraits

A3 Prints and Owl Potraits

Well it has been a while since I have posted an actual long blog post, sorry about that I’ve been rather busy!

Good news, I now have an A3 printer it is absolutely fantastic! Now I can make some really high quality prints and originals as some of my work has never been seen physically on paper. The plan is to print, frame, and exhibit. I missed something important off that list…oh yeah, sell. My online shop has been bare for quite a while, well that is about to change…well in the next week or so.

Barn owl in monochrome
Black and White Version

This image looks particularly good in A3 both the colour version seen on this http://graceowenart.com/gallery-2/wildlife/ page so I shall be doing some lovely, high quality prints of this image. At the moment I am creating more wildlife art than fairy art, but I always like to create something a bit mystical or magical about the paintings I do so, I’m never too far away from the wonderful world of fantasy. I do love Imagine FX (a magazine dedicated to fantasy art)

Anyway, do keep checking back for more art etc and I’ll reveal when my shop is launched with all its new stock! Yay!
